Freesia
Freesia is one of the most fragrant cut flowers in the world — a sweet, citrusy, instantly recognisable scent that fills a room from a single stem. The flowers themselves are quietly elegant: a row of trumpet-shaped blooms ranged along a graceful arching stem, opening in sequence from bottom to top over several days. Freesia is the rare flower that's as much about smell as it is about visual beauty.

At Flower Icon, freesia is a year-round staple — used in bridal work, gift bouquets, and arrangements where fragrance matters.

What Makes Freesia Special
The structure is unmistakable: a single bend at the top of each stem produces a row of 6 to 12 trumpet-shaped flowers, all facing the same direction along a horizontal arc. The flowers open in sequence, starting with the bloom closest to the stem and moving outward over five to seven days — so a single freesia stem displays new flowers daily over a full week.
The fragrance is what people remember. Freesia has a distinctive citrusy-sweet scent, lighter than rose, brighter than lily, and so recognisable it's been turned into countless perfumes and bath products. A single white freesia in a small bud vase can perfume an entire room.
Freesia Care
Freesia is one of the longer-lasting cut flowers, and its sequential opening means it visibly evolves over the course of its display.
1. Diagonal cut, fresh water
Standard angled cut. Re-trim every 3 days to keep water uptake strong.
2. Strip lower leaves
Any foliage below the waterline rots quickly.
3. Cool water, changed every 2–3 days
Freesias prefer cool water and react badly to bacterial buildup.
4. Patience with the buds
When you buy freesia, most flowers will still be tightly closed buds. They'll open in sequence over the next week. Don't worry — they always open, given a few days in water.
5. Cool environment
Warm rooms accelerate freesia's bloom cycle, shortening the total display time. Cool rooms let you enjoy them longer.
Freesia Meaning
Freesia symbolises trust, friendship, and innocence in most floral traditions. White freesia in particular is associated with purity and quiet devotion, making it a popular choice for weddings, baby celebrations, and sympathy arrangements. Yellow freesia carries warmth and friendship. Pink freesia signals affection and motherly love.
How to Style Freesia
Freesia's arching, horizontal stem makes it a natural framing flower — placed at the edge of an arrangement, the curve adds movement and direction. It pairs beautifully with roses, ranunculus, tulips, eucalyptus, and gypsophila. In gift bouquets, even three or four freesia stems contribute fragrance that elevates the whole bouquet.
