How to Care for Cut Peonies
Peonies are spectacular but need a little attention to reach their full bloom potential. Follow these care tips to get the most from your cut peonies.
1. Buy Tight Buds
Purchase peonies when the buds are still closed and feel like a soft marshmallow when gently squeezed. Tight buds travel better and last longer. If you want them to open quickly, place them in a warm room; for a slower bloom, keep them cool.
2. Recut Stems at an Angle
Use sharp scissors or a floral knife to cut at least 2–3 cm off each stem at a 45-degree angle. Do this under running water or in a bowl of water to prevent air bubbles from blocking water uptake. Remove any leaves that fall below the waterline.
3. Change Water Daily
Peonies are thirsty flowers. Use a clean vase filled with fresh, room-temperature water and change it every day. Adding a sachet of flower food helps nourish the blooms and keeps bacteria at bay, extending vase life significantly.
4. Keep Away from Heat
Avoid placing peonies near sunny windowsills, radiators, or fruit bowls — ethylene gas from ripening fruit accelerates wilting. A cool, bright spot away from direct sunlight is ideal. At night, moving the vase to a cooler room can noticeably extend bloom life.
5. Remove Guard Petals
The outermost petals — called guard petals — may look brown or damaged. Gently remove these to encourage the inner petals to open fully and reveal the peony's stunning centre. This is a normal part of peony care and not a sign of poor quality.
Vase Life
With proper care, cut peonies last 5–7 days, with some varieties lasting up to 10 days. Buying buds rather than open flowers maximises the time you spend enjoying them. Cooler ambient temperatures and daily water changes are the biggest factors in longevity.
Bouquet Pairing Ideas
Peonies pair beautifully with a range of complementary flowers. Try combining them with garden roses for a lush, romantic aesthetic, or with eucalyptus and ranunculus for a soft, textured look. Tulips, sweet peas, and scabiosa all work wonderfully alongside peonies in seasonal spring arrangements.
