Football Mum
The football mum is exactly what it sounds like: a chrysanthemum the size of a softball, with hundreds of tightly packed petals forming a dense, rounded pompom. It's one of the most dramatic single-stem flowers a florist can offer — a single football mum has the visual weight of an entire bouquet of smaller flowers. They've been a traditional centerpiece of homecoming corsages and autumn arrangements for decades, but they belong in far more than that.

At Flower Icon, football mums show up in our most architectural arrangements. Here's what makes them special and how to use them.

What Makes the Football Mum Different
Football mums are "disbudded" — meaning the side buds are removed early in the growing process so all the plant's energy goes into one single, massive bloom. A standard chrysanthemum might produce six small flowers per stem; a football mum produces one giant one, often four to six inches across.
The petals are layered in tight concentric rings around a hidden center, giving the whole bloom a uniform, almost sculptural appearance. In white, the effect is luxurious and clean — closer to a peony in feel than a typical mum. In autumn bronze and yellow, they read warm, structural, and seasonal.
Football Mum Care: 2–3 Weeks of Vase Life
Chrysanthemums are the longest-lasting cut flowers you can buy, and football mums in particular hold for two to three weeks reliably with basic care.
1. Cut the woody stem at an angle
Football mum stems are thicker than most. Use sharp shears and re-cut every 4–5 days.
2. Strip lower foliage
Leaves will rot in water — strip them before placing the stem.
3. Cool water, changed weekly
Mums tolerate longer between water changes than most flowers. Once a week is fine if the water still looks clean.
4. Keep them away from ripening fruit
Like most cut flowers, mums are sensitive to ethylene gas from ripening fruit. A few feet of distance is enough.
5. Cool environment extends life dramatically
In a cool room (60–70°F), a football mum can hold for the full three weeks. In a warm room, expect closer to two.
Football Mum Symbolism
Chrysanthemums symbolise longevity, joy, and loyalty in most traditions — in East Asia particularly, they're a flower of high regard. In Western contexts, white football mums also appear frequently in sympathy work because of their pure color and remarkable durability. The autumn-colored varieties (bronze, copper, gold) are more often used in seasonal and homecoming arrangements.
Styling Football Mums
One football mum is often all an arrangement needs. Their scale means they easily anchor a centerpiece on their own. In larger designs, pair them with smaller textural flowers (stock, scabiosa, ranunculus) and lush greenery — magnolia foliage works particularly well behind a white football mum.
