Calla Lilies

The calla lily is one of the most architecturally pure flowers in the world. A single curving spathe — smooth, waxy, and perfectly formed — on a clean, upright stem. There are no petals in the traditional sense, no visual complexity, no noise. Just a shape that manages to be simultaneously minimal and extraordinary. At Flower Icon, we use calla lilies in arrangements where we want elegance without fuss, and as standalone stems where the flower itself is the entire statement.

Beautiful floral arrangements available for fast same-day delivery.

What Makes the Calla Lily Different

The calla lily's structure is unlike any other common cut flower. What appears to be a petal is actually a spathe — a modified leaf that wraps around the central spadix to form the iconic trumpet shape. This means the "flower" is essentially a single smooth surface with no separate petal components, which is why it photographs so cleanly and why it ages so gracefully. Rather than losing petals, a calla lily simply curls and softens at the edges when it is past its prime.

The stem is thick, fleshy, and hollow — rigid enough that calla lilies rarely droop the way softer flowers do, but also prone to splitting or collapsing at the base when stressed. Understanding this structure is the key to getting maximum vase life from them.

The colour range of calla lilies is exceptional. Standard white is the most recognised, but deep burgundy, near-black, yellow, and coral varieties are equally available and dramatically different in character. A dark calla lily arrangement reads as sophisticated and modern in a way that a white arrangement does not.

Calla Lily Care: The Florist's Guide to Maximum Vase Life

1. Cut stems straight across — not at an angle
Like gerbera daisy stems, calla lily stems are hollow and thick-walled. An angled cut can cause the stem walls to press together and block water uptake. A straight, perpendicular cut keeps the channel fully open. Recut every two to three days.

2. Condition in warm water first
When you first receive calla lilies, place them in warm (not hot) water for the first hour. This helps them hydrate quickly and allows the bloom to open to its full shape. After that initial period, switch to cool, fresh water for ongoing display.

3. Always store and display upright
Calla lily stems are strong but will bend permanently if left horizontal for any length of time. Always transport, store, and display them in a vertical position with at least 5–8cm of water reaching the stem base.

4. Avoid touching the spathe
The waxy surface of a calla lily spathe is prone to fingerprint marks and pressure bruising. Even light contact leaves permanent marks on the smooth surface. Handle by the stem only.

5. Change water every two days and recut stems
Calla lilies tend to develop slime on the stem base, particularly in warm environments. A clean vase, fresh water, and a fresh stem cut every two days will meaningfully extend vase life.

6. Curling edges are normal
The outer edge of the spathe will begin to curl backward as the flower matures. This is a natural part of the bloom's development and does not indicate a problem. True decline shows as softening and collapse at the stem base, not at the spathe edge.

How Long Do Calla Lilies Last?

With proper care — straight stem cuts, fresh water changed every two days, upright storage — calla lilies typically last 7–10 days. Mini calla lilies tend to last slightly longer than standard varieties. Flowers with tightly wrapped spathes when received will continue to open over several days, extending the period when they look their best.

Calla Lily Meaning

The calla lily has one of the richest symbolic histories of any flower. In the Western tradition, white calla lilies are closely associated with purity, rebirth, and the transition of the soul — which is why they appear so frequently in both wedding and funeral floristry. They are simultaneously a flower of celebration and of mourning, which reflects their quiet, serious elegance.

In contemporary usage, calla lilies communicate sophistication and refinement. They are a statement of taste rather than sentiment — a flower chosen by someone who has moved past roses and wants something more considered.

Calla Lilies in Bouquets and Arrangements

Calla lilies work beautifully in three contexts: as architectural statement stems in a cylindrical vase (3–5 stems, same color, grouped tightly), as the hero flower in a high-impact bridal bouquet, or as structural elements in formal wedding florals where their clean lines photograph exceptionally well against formal fabric and clean backgrounds.

They pair well with: white roses (classic, formal), deep burgundy dahlias (dramatic contrast), soft greenery like ruscus or eucalyptus (natural balance), and other architectural flowers like anthuriums or large orchids.

For sympathy occasions, white calla lilies are one of the most appropriate and respectful choices available. Their clean, quiet elegance communicates reverence without sentimentality, and they last long enough to be meaningful well after the initial gesture.
