Some vases ask for color. This one asked for shadow. When a matte charcoal vase from Crate & Barrel arrived at our San Francisco studio, its carved surface already looked like bark after rain. We built the arrangement to match it: dark, sculptural, a little wild.
Black Calla Lilies, White Hydrangea
Deep plum calla lilies, so dark they read as black, spill over one shoulder of the vase. Behind them sit full heads of white hydrangea, soft as clouds, so the dark blooms have something to stand against. Above it all, bare curly willow branches twist upward like ink lines drawn in the air.
One vase, two moods. Up close it is all velvet petals and green stems. From across the room it is a single bold silhouette.

How to Style a Dark Vase
Use contrast, not more of the same. A dark vessel disappears behind dark flowers. Pair it with something pale, like white hydrangea, so the deep tones have a frame.
Give it height. Branches such as curly willow add drama without adding weight, and they let the arrangement breathe above the vase.
Let one flower lead. Here it is the calla lily. Everything else supports it.
Work with the texture. A carved or ridged surface already has movement. Clean, glossy stems like calla lilies keep the whole piece from feeling busy.
