If you're searching for dahlias near you in San Francisco, you've picked the right city. The dahlia isn't just in season here — it's the official flower of San Francisco, adopted by the Board of Supervisors exactly a century ago, in 1926. Every summer the Dahlia Dell in Golden Gate Park, just beside the Conservatory of Flowers, erupts into one of the most photographed flower displays in the city. And every summer, we get the same question at the studio: where can I actually buy them?

When is dahlia season in California?

In Northern California, dahlia season runs from July through late October, peaking in August and September. The Bay Area's cool nights and mild days are close to perfect dahlia weather, which is why local blooms here rival anything in the country. By November the tubers go dormant, and fresh local dahlias essentially disappear until the following summer — so late summer and early fall is the moment.

Why dahlias are hard to find (and why that's actually good news)

Here's what most people don't realize: the big national flower-delivery brands barely carry dahlias. The blooms are delicate, they don't tolerate long refrigerated shipping, and their vase life rewards freshness above all. A dahlia that was cut three days ago and flown across the country arrives tired. This is a flower that belongs to local florists — it goes from grower to studio to your hands in a day or two, or it isn't worth buying.

Where to buy dahlias in San Francisco

Farmers markets. The Ferry Plaza farmers market on Saturdays often has grower stands with dahlias at peak season — beautiful, first-come-first-served, and cash-and-carry.

Grocery stores. Occasionally, and usually in mixed bunches. Selection and freshness vary widely.

A local flower studio. At Flower Icon we source dahlias at their absolute peak — locally during the season, and from specialty growers beyond it — and design them the same day they're delivered. Our dinnerplate and café au lait varieties anchor some of our most-loved fall arrangements, and every delivery travels in our aqua box, a water-filled vase that keeps stems hydrated to the door. Browse the dahlia collection, or order by 4 PM for same-day flower delivery in San Francisco.

Dahlia care: making the most of a short-lived beauty

Dahlias give you 3–5 spectacular days rather than two quiet weeks. To stretch them: recut stems at an angle the moment they arrive, use cool water and change it daily, keep the vase away from direct sun and ripening fruit, and remove any foliage below the waterline. Every Flower Icon bouquet includes a care card and flower food; our full guide lives in the flower care guide.

The short answer

Fresh dahlias in San Francisco are a July–October pleasure, best bought locally, at their best when they've never seen the inside of a shipping box. Deciding between varieties and colors? Our dahlia bouquet guide walks through dinnerplates, café au laits, and how to style them. For a designed dahlia arrangement delivered today — or a fall arrangement built around them — we're at 181 2nd Street, and delivery runs across the entire city.
