What Flowers Are in Season? A San Francisco Month-by-Month Guide

"What's in season right now?" is the question we love most at the studio — because ordering in season means fresher flowers, better prices, and arrangements at their absolute peak. Here's the San Francisco flower calendar as we live it, month by month. Bookmark it; it doesn't change much year to year.

January

Tulips arrive — the season's first great gift — alongside paperwhites, anemones, and the first ranunculus. Carnations (January's birth flower) are at their year-round best.

February

Peak tulip and ranunculus season, early hyacinth, and of course roses everywhere for Valentine's — order those early; the whole industry strains that week.

March

Daffodils, anemones at their finest, sweet peas begin, and cherry blossom branches make brief, spectacular appearances.

April

Sweet peas peak, lilacs arrive in their short window, tulips wind down, and the first garden roses appear.

Stunning floral bouquets delivered to your doorstep

May

The luxury month: peonies begin, lily of the valley has its famous few weeks, and garden roses hit stride — conveniently timed for Mother's Day.

June

Peak peony, garden roses everywhere, delphinium and foxglove add height, hydrangeas begin — wedding season's abundance is real.

Handheld mono bouquet of lush peonies in full bloom, showcasing soft, layered petals.

July

Dahlias begin (San Francisco's official flower), sunflowers arrive, hydrangeas hit peak blue, zinnias bring saturated color.

August

Dahlia glory — dinnerplates at full size — with sunflowers, lisianthus, and late hydrangeas. Arguably SF's best local-flower month.

September

Dahlias continue, marigolds deepen, asters (September's birth flower) arrive, and the first amber-toned fall palettes appear.

October

Marigold season peaks for Día de los Muertos — order early — alongside final dahlias, chrysanthemums, and ornamental branches.

November

Chrysanthemums rule — far more beautiful than their reputation — with dried elements, wheat, and the full Thanksgiving palette.

December

Amaryllis, paperwhites, evergreen and berry branches, and the red-and-white holiday classics; ilex berry branches disappear fast.

Year-round, always excellent

Roses, carnations, orchids, calla lilies, anthurium, and hydrangeas from specialty growers never really leave — they're the backbone that lets us design in any style, any week, with flowers sourced locally and globally.
